  • First SWV Rivers' Forum highlights solutions

SWV Rivers' Forum Read the Latest news 26th May 2023 “Quite possibly the most frank and useful forum to address river pollution of the past 20 years.” This was the assessment of former Foreign Secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind, who chaired the first Rivers’ Forum Supporting Wounded Veterans. A remarkable group of more than 60 people came together in Berkshire over two days in May (23rd and 24th) to connect, collaborate and co-ordinate on better ways to solve the crises facing our rivers. In between short presentations from senior figures — including Environment Agency Chairman Alan Lovell — delegates discussed specific challenges in smaller groups, their answers recorded by moderators. Attendees included senior figures from water companies, NGOs, farming, academia and research, campaign groups, polluting industries, user groups, innovators and experts from abroad. This is not only an important event to work towards solutions for the UK's river pollution problem, but will also provide training and employment opportunities for Veterans within the conservation and river sector. Our Founder and CEO spoke to George Wedlake of the British Forces Broadcasting Service about the Forum and how Veterans will be working to support efforts on the nation's rivers. • Veterans Foundation Veterans Foundation With grateful thanks to the Veterans' Foundation for their recent grant which will help us carry out research about PTSD. The Veterans' Foundation has been set up to help fund charities and other charitable organisations that are helping serving and former members of the Armed Forces, and their dependents, who are in need. The charities and other organisations the Veterans' Foundation has helped include those tackling the challenges of mental and physical injuries, homelessness, unemployment, and children’s loss of parents while serving and remembrance. John, a medically discharged veteran, joined SWV's programmes in 2017: John joined the Army at the tender age of 16 in September of 2003. He attended the Army Foundation College with little or no understanding of what to expect and joined the King's Regiment in Catterick Garrison in 2004. After a tour in Iraq, he realised he wasn't the same person who had gone out there 7 months previously: he became restless, struggling with flashbacks, nightmares and night terrors. Medically discharged in 2017, John was lost and unemployed when SWV met him. We took him to Switzerland for our rehabilitation Ski Week. During this trip, he regained his confidence, met like-minded veterans and made contacts. Through those contacts, his civilian life began and he has since established a successful career. With the help of the Veterans foundation, we can continue to help wounded veterans like John discover a rich and fulfilling life after service.

  • Veterans Foundation supports SWV research into PTSD

Veterans' Foundation grants £20,000 to Pioneer Programme Read the Latest news 12 August 2021 This award brings the MDMA-assisted therapy trials a step closer to UK veterans SWV has been awarded a new grant of £20,000 to support its campaign to bring MDMA-assisted therapy to the UK. The Pioneer Programme consists of two clinical trials of MDMA-assisted therapy for veterans with severe PTSD, delivered by King’s College London in association with MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies) in the US. It will build on many years of research in the US, and the very encouraging outcomes of the Phase 3 trials there. Army veteran Martin served just shy of 16 years but was discharged with Complex PTSD. Speaking about SWV’s Pioneer Programme, Martin said: “To have a new life, to have a world where my PTSD is not as dominating as it is right now. It would be giving me a chance to have a new life….what a wonderful gift that would be.” Gilly Norton, Chief Executive of Supporting Wounded Veterans said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Veterans’ Foundation for their generous grant. The grant will support the delivery of our Pioneer Programme.” The Veterans’ Foundation have given away £7.1m since inception and we predict giving away grants amounting to £4.5m in the next 12 months. This is made possible by donations and players of the Veterans’ Lottery – thank you to everyone involved. Previous Next
