The Ski Week
What is the Ski Week?
First held in 2013, a ski-based induction and support week forms the first part of the programme. After this comes the mentoring programme to provide veterans with the support they need to get them back into employment.
During the Ski Week, 28 wounded ex-Iraq or Afghanistan campaign Veterans are taken to Klosters in Switzerland, supported by 20 Ski Buddies, and introduced to skiing with highly trained specialised instructors.
The next skiing dates are 11-18 March 2017.
Paralympic sport is a proven, potent medium for confidence-building. Adaptive skiing enables the “disabled” to level with the “able” in a way that few other sports can. As one of our injured veterans puts it: “With my walking stick, I’m an invalid, but in skis, I’m just another person.” SWV has so far helped almost 100 veterans to transform their lives. In that regard, the Ski Week is just the start of an on-going rehabilitation relationship involving mentoring, pain management and the searching and securing of jobs.
The disabilities of Veterans involved is varied. From severe physical injuries to combat stress. In order to come on the trip, Veterans have to have received their medical discharge, or have that discharge imminent.
